'In Dutch homes from the 17th century on, windows became to play a major role in defining the border between public and private space. The symbolic meaning these windows had is supported by ways in which these windows were architecturally designed and decorated.'

Private, intimate space (home) - Public space

Visual exchange: transparency of the window connects the inside and outside life.
Closed curtains make it separated space and a strict border.

Windows serve as a physical border, but have cultural and symbolical meaning as well (window decoration, curtains)

I had an image in my mind:
The fleeting moment of a flapping white curtain in an open window and the sun coming into my home.
